ENGINEERING CONCEPTS IN
OUR EVERYDAY LIVES
with JON BERG & DAVID HAMLOW
AGES 11+
We use tools every day to make our lives better. Consider for example a bread knife, a door hinge, and a thermostat — each one was designed to meet a need. In this class we will explore simple machines, observe the properties of materials, and discover how these concepts can be combined to solve everyday problems. Each lesson will include a hands-on demonstration or student activity.
Required skills: Students should be able to listen to a 15-20 minute lecture on the day's topic, actively participate in hands-on activities, and work cooperatively in group activities when necessary.
Homework: One or two brief online educational videos may be assigned as homework each week to introduce a topic. Students should check the class bulletin regularly for homework and any needed supplies for class.
Lecture time: 15-20 minutes on average, but may vary depending on the topic
