GREEK MYTHOLOGY
FOR HIGH SCHOOL
with MICKEY QUINTANA AND ASSISTANT SONYA BENSON
AGES 13+
Heroes, monsters, and oracles, oh my! Come learn about the Gods and Goddess and all things mythical from Greece. This class is geared for High School aged students. We will use the high school level themed Medusa Mythology Exam syllabus as our guide as we survey Greek myths. Past themes include “What Happens in Tartarus,” “Ichor of Zeus,” “Heroic Helpers,” and “Monstrous Mutations.”
We’ll use the texts as listed in the guide and discuss the stories and characters, as well as have related class time activities. All required primary texts listed in the guide are available online for free. A class syllabus with all related links will be provided. Other suggested texts will also be listed and an effort will be made to provide copies/scans as needed.
Because we are using the National Mythology Exam syllabus there is an optional exam to take in the spring to earn a certificate, ribbon, or medal in the year’s topic! In late spring, students will create a project that can be presented during the last few class sessions or at the end of year celebration. Project examples could include a replica of The Aegis, a model or outfit/costume of a character, a brief play, poster, diorama, etc. Let your creativity soar! Any awards earned from the exam will be presented at the end of year celebration.
Skills required: Capacity to engage in conversation regarding the material and to have the commitment to read the stories outside of class each week. Writing skills for taking notes.
Homework: will consist primarily of assigned readings to prepare for class and possible activities/worksheets. Hopefully the readings take about 2 hours or less during the week.
Lecture time: About 20-25 minutes maybe? Hopefully not much more as I’d like group discussions as well.
Special supplies parents provide: Notebook of some sort, paper, writing instruments, possibly markers/crayons
Special fee: If a student chooses to take the National Mythology Exam, the cost is $8.50 per student.
Is fall semester required for spring semester? YES
