JOURNALISM

with JENNY PARSONS & MAGEN HANSEN

AGES 10+

Be on the team that creates the co-op newsletter! Twice per semester, our co-op puts out a multi-page newsletter detailing both what is happening in our co-op and the goings on of our larger community. Students will learn how to conduct interviews and then use the information gathered to write fun and engaging articles. We will also learn how to take photographs, edit stories and layout the newsletter. There is even an opportunity to create comics and puzzles. This is your chance to be the record keepers for our co-op!

We’ve lowered the age requirement to 10+ this year.  If we have very mixed ages in the class, we are able to split the younger kids and older kids at times, so the younger, less experienced journalists can learn the basics of writing a news story and work on shorter articles, while the older more experienced writers can do stories that match more with their abilities.  We will also do activities and lessons as a whole class.

We spend our time in class writing our stories, sometimes doing interviews if scheduling works out that way, doing various activities and lessons that will teach how to write news articles, and about media literacy. "

Required skills: To be successful in this class, students should have strong reading and writing skills. They should be able to write a minimum of two paragraphs. Students will also edit each other’s work, so the ability to both give and receive constructive feedback is a must.

Homework: Students sometimes have to conduct interviews for their articles outside of class, and they must write their articles outside of class.

Lecture time: Very little

Special supplies parents provide: A computer at home to type stories
