MIDDLE SCHOOL WRITING

with NONA CARTER
 

AGES 11+

This class is geared towards middle school writers.  The focus will be on the 5 paragraph essay format.  I will teach the writing process, essay structure, different types of essays, writing techniques, appropriate language and about plagiarism.  Students will be free to write on topics of their choice, but I will provide guidance for those who struggle to pick a topic.  Students will write approximately 2-3 essays per semester, and each will be peer reviewed.  In addition, I will offer my feedback to them individually over Zoom.  Emphasis will be on editing and writing numerous drafts in order to achieve their highest potential.  At the end of the year students will complete a portfolio of their writing.

 

**I am willing to also include units on creative writing, letter writing and poetry if students have the desire to learn those skills.  However, the primary goal of the class will be on essay writing."

 

Required skills: Students must enter the class comfortable writing a single paragraph.  Their spelling does not need to be perfect, but does need to be good enough to convey their meaning.  Students should be able to use correct punctuation.  Students will be asked to submit their essays electronically, and therefore must be able to type and have access to an email account. 

 

Homework: Yes.  Students will be writing at home regularly, as well as meeting with me for individual feedback 2-3 times a semester.

 

Lecture time: 25 ish minutes.
